Rationale

The curriculum is all the planned activities that we organise in order to promote learning and personal growth and development. It includes not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but also the range of extra-curricular activities that the school organises in order to enrich the experience of the children. It also includes the ‘hidden curriculum’, or what the children learn from the way they are treated and expected to behave. We aim to teach children how to grow into positive, responsible people, who can work and co-operate with others while developing knowledge and skills, so that they achieve their true potential.

Approach

Our curriculum is delivered in line with current statutory requirements. In addition, it is shaped by the values we hold dear, including our overriding dedication to lifelong learning. We value the way in which all children are unique, and our curriculum promotes respect for the views of each individual child, as well as for people of all cultures. We value the spiritual and moral development of each person, as well as their intellectual and physical growth. We value the importance of each person in our community. We organise our curriculum so that we promote co-operation and understanding between all members of our community. We value the rights enjoyed by each person in our society. We respect each child in our school for who they are, and we treat them with fairness and honesty. We aim to enable each person to be successful, and we provide equal opportunities for all the children in our school. We value our environment, and we aim, through our curriculum, to teach respect for our world, and how we should care for it for future generations, as well as our own.

Through the curriculum, our pupils will be encouraged to develop:

  • Lively enquiring minds through questioning, investigating and making rational decisions
  • Effective communication skills
  • Key skills in literacy and numeracy to support other curriculum areas
  • The ability to use number and ICT confidently
  • Knowledge, understanding and a sense of wonder of the world in which they live
  • Personal, spiritual and moral values and respect for others, their beliefs and environment
  • An appreciation of culture and the arts
  • Recognition of the contribution of science, mathematics and technology to their quality of life
  • An understanding of the value of exercise and the pursuit of positive attitudes towards developing physical skills and teamwork
  • An appreciation of the importance of pursuing a healthy lifestyle and keeping themselves and others safe
  • High personal expectations, celebration of success and an appreciation of excellence
  • An understanding of how to study independently and collaboratively and see learning as an enjoyable and purposeful activity which continues throughout life

At Kings Copse, challenging targets are set so that children can learn effectively, make progress and attain in line with or better than their prior attainment. Cross-curricular opportunities are used to enhance children’s knowledge and understanding. All children are given equality of access to the whole curriculum so that they may learn effectively.

Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural Education

At Kings Copse we aim to provide a comprehensive academic, spiritual, moral, social, cultural and physical education for all children. Through our curriculum – including taught lessons, the provision of experiences, a range of enrichment activities and extra-curricular opportunities – our thoughtful and wide-ranging promotion of spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and physical well-being enables our children to thrive in a supportive, highly cohesive learning community. Promoting British Values

The Department for Education (DfE) has recently reinforced the need "to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rules of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs". These values are set out in the DfE's 'Promoting fundamental British values as part of SMSC in schools' (2014) and as part of SMSC under the current Ofsted Inspection Framework.

At Kings Copse Primary School, these values are reinforced in the following ways:

Democracy

We have an active school council with members who are elected by their class mates and who meet regularly to discuss relevant issues and to express the views of their peers. They take on the role of leading their class by actively promoting the decisions and initiatives made by the council and the school.

The Rule of Law

Pupils are taught from an early age about the rules of the school. The children, follow the Kings Copse Golden Rules, which are displayed around the school. The values behind the rules are embedded in the ethos of the school. The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout the school day, including when dealing with behaviour, and through school assemblies. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, how they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that they involve and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service help reinforce this message.

Individual Liberty

Pupils are encouraged to make choices and take risks in a safe and supportive environment. We help pupils assess risk by involving them in decisions, through our PSHE teaching and our e-safety content.

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through provision of a safe environment and empowering education.  Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons. Whether it be through choice of learning challenge, of how they record, or participation in our numerous extra-curricular clubs, pupils are given opportunities to make choices.  Pupils are encouraged to persevere and be resilient with their attitude to learning. They are encouraged to be curious and to ask questions, seeking creative solutions to any challenges they face. 

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those with Different Faiths and Beliefs


Through promotion of our Golden Rules, all members of the school community treat each other with respect.  Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. Southampton is an increasingly diverse community. We welcome and celebrate different faiths and cultures, actively promoting and highlighting diversity. Through the PSHE curriculum, discussions with visitors to the school and assemblies, we help pupils develop a growing understanding of their role in the school and wider community. We involve ourselves in community events which sometimes benefit local people and sometimes aim to help charities on an international level.

In line with the national PREVENT strategy (introduced in 2011), we will actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist’ views.

Sex and Relationships Education

This is included in the wider curriculum area of personal, social and health education. Our specific sex and relationships programme begins in Year 5 and continues throughout Year 6. Before the children undertake a module of work, parents are invited to attend a meeting where information about the curriculum content is shared. If a parent wishes to to opt a child out of this programme (due to personal or religious reasons), they may do so if they wish.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

Our educational aims are the same for all our children. We respond to all children’s diverse learning needs but recognise that some children may experience barriers to their learning. Such children may need additional or different help from their peers throughout or at any time during their school career. Where a child has a specific individual need, this will be identified as early as possible, working in close partnership with parents and other professionals.

The school will make effective provision for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), in accordance with the principles set out in the ‘Special Educational Needs Code of Practice 2001’ and Hampshire’s SEND Policy. Class teachers and the school’s SEND co-ordinator (SENDCO) are available in school to discuss any concerns parents may have in relation to SEND.

More Able and Talented Pupils

We strive to ensure that all children, whatever their ability and needs, are given equal opportunities to develop their gifts and talents. All children have an entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum that offers challenge, enrichment and extension. We also focus on the social and emotional aspects of learning to ensure that this challenge and extension is placed in a context that will support these more able children. This is important throughout their school life and not just within the primary school context.

Children of primary school age grow in their interest and desire to improve and broaden their skills and abilities in a range of activities. It is often rewarding to see how these skills develop into real talent. It is very much a part of our joint responsibility with parents to see that we do everything to encourage children to develop these talents, whether they are academic, sporting, musical, artistic or other. We are keen to share successes and achievements both in and out of school so that these can be celebrated.

Clubs

We offer a range of clubs and activities in school. These may be run by a member of staff, a volunteer or sometimes a commercial company. Information is given to children each term about the clubs that will be available. Permission from parents must be received before a child can take part in an extra-curricular club. If a club is run by an outside agency, a charge will be made. 

Music Tuition

The school organises specialist instrumental tuition through Hampshire Music Service. Parents pay for these lessons on a termly basis. They are heavily subsidised by the school. Instruments that children have learned previously have included guitar, flute, recorder, piano and drums.

Trips and Residential Visits

The school seeks opportunities when appropriate to broaden the children’s experiences. Throughout the year, the children have the opportunity to take part in a range of educational visits that enhance the curriculum. These change each year but may include: local walks; museum or gallery visits; trips to historical sites; visits to the theatre or arts companies; river studies; local animal parks (such as Marwell Zoo) and Hampshire curriculum centres (e.g. the Search Museum in Gosport).

We also have many visitors to school. Recently these have included: authors (such as Paul Geraghty); community professionals (such as the police, school nurse and fire service); sports coaches (who lead workshops/lessons for the children); members of local churches (who support our RE curriculum and assemblies) and subject specialists (for example, Roman workshops or a Mathmagican).

In Year 6, the children have the opportunity to take part in a residential visit. Previous residential visits have included Stubbington, Osmington Bay and Brownsea Island.

Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural Education at Kings Copse

Our school follows the 'Letters and Sounds' phonic scheme of work.

Children follow a reading scheme which is based on colour bands. These bands are based on materials from the Oxford Reading Tree (ORT) and Pearson Bug Club materials. These are supplemented with other relevant and appropriately banded materials where appropriate.
